Infrastructure Enhancement

Issue
A Skibo client in the oil and gas industry was suffering from a number of issues across their offices in Aberdeen and London. These included: Aging server and storage hardware, poor system performance, non-standardised network structure, rapid acceleration of data growth and a lack of redundancy

Solution
Skibo proposed a solution whereby the aging SAN was retired and replaced with twin high capacity Storage Servers operating over a point to point link and delivering full data replication between the two sites. Existing physical servers were replaced with virtual domain controllers in each office making the entire infrastructure fully fault tolerant whilst taking advantage of the latest server technology.

Benefits
The customer has seen dramatic improvements in data access speeds for both read and write in each office compared with the previous SAN. Single points of failure have been eliminated within the infrastructure including much improved recovery from a disaster situation arising at either location also being introduced.
The result is a far more robust, resilient, scalable IT infrastructure that delivers high performance and availability that assists in maximizing the client’s operational productivity.

Customer Feedback
“I have been delighted with the service received from the Skibo team on a recent project to replace ageing server and storage hardware, provide data capacity and resilience for the future along with delivering significantly improved system performance.
The project leader considered a range of potential solutions in advance, which allowed options to be considered to meet our needs and budget. Once sanctioned, all aspects of the project were delivered to expectations within the time and budgets established. I would particularly comment on the quality of the project management, the pre-emptive and effective communication throughout, along with excellent client / user engagement through testing work and more generally. This all contributed to a very smooth project with minimal user impact with subsequent positive feedback from staff on the system performance benefits that have resulted.
It’s rare that you can get through any significant IT project without some element of stress and impact on the business, but I can genuinely say that this was achieved on this project and I would complement the Skibo team for that, who have been have been a pleasure to work with”

Client Web Portal

Issue
Our client, a provider of Oilfield chemicals approached us with a request to develop a web portal to allow them to easily share files with some of their customers rather than relying on email as a primary distribution method.

Solution
Using current open source web technologies, Skibo developed a very simple internet portal site that would allow the easy upload and distribution of files to selected user accounts.

Benefits
Our client is able to offer a more dynamic way of distributing documents to their customers

Customer Feedback
"Skibo provided a clear scope of work, mock slides to demonstrate, estimated turnaround time and associated costs for the project. I was provided with routine updates and a demonstration portal to work with prior to the full system being up and running. The launch was slightly later than originally estimated but I was very happy with the quality of work and excellent attitude throughout and would use them again.” - Account Manager

New Business Startup

Issue
Skibo were approached by a new business startup to assist with the speedy set-up and configuration of its IT infrastructure into an office across two floors.

Solution
Skibo responded very quickly to fully understand the pressures and requirements faced by the new startup. A site visit was carried out to highlight issues needing to be addressed with a timeline for resolution that fitted with the customers expectations. Subsequent to this Skibo were further engaged to design and implement a web-site applicable for the business which again was fully completed to the customers satisfaction.

Benefits
All work was completed within the timescales and allowed the company to begin business operations.

Customer Feedback
“Thank you again for the organised, prompt, and professional service provided by Skibo. May I add, the personable approach of you and your technicians that carried-out the initial set-up of my company’s network service, and the following prompt support I received when I was looking to extend my LAN connections in my office was very much appreciated.
I was also amazed at the speed and imagination of the Skibo web designer, after being badly let-down by another professional web design company.
As a new start-up company I cannot recommend Skibo highly enough, and I will promote you to anyone that I know, that may benefit from your services.”

Applying Enterprise IT Concepts to the shipping sector

Issue
Our client, a key player in the offshore supply sector was taking delivery of a new supply vessel to supplement their existing fleet. In the past, other vessels in the fleet (and across the sector) have had difficulties around equipment failures at sea bringing down email communications until a port call had been made. Skibo was tasked with providing a robust, resilient solution that allowed for maximum availability and uptime whilst at sea for long periods of time.

Solution
By applying Enterprise IT concepts to the problem, Skibo was able to provide a high availability solution that allowed for access to files and emails aboard the vessel to be provided consistently even if there was a major hardware failure which in turn meant that an emergency port call was no longer necessary in this circumstance.

Benefits
This solution allows a vessel to spend more time at sea without returning to port which in turn means that our client is able to offer a more reliable service to their customers.

Completely Seamless Office Move

Issue
Due to expansion of its Aberdeen office an oil and gas operator required to move its sixty plus staff to a larger office. Skibo were engaged to organise and manage the move of the office over a weekend period.

Solution
Skibo applied project management and technical expertise and worked with the client and 3rd parties to successfully complete the work within the given timescales and within the agreed budget.

Benefits
There was no loss of business operation to the client. Staff left the existing office on the Friday evening and returned to a previously allocated desk at the new site on the Monday morning with their access to all services on the customers global corporate domain available as before.

Providing resilient connections to Cloud Based Services

Issue
As one of our clients in the oil and gas sector increased significantly its use of cloud based services Skibo were tasked with putting in place a fully resilient and reliable WAN connection for both its major office locations in Aberdeen and London.

Solution
Using globally recognised and enterprise standard Cisco equipment Skibo implemented and configured an auto failover solution between two internet service providers with failover and fallback occurring seamlessly and without affecting the end users.

Benefits
This solution ensures that the client has continuous connectivity to the internet and un-interrupted connection to all required cloud based services.

Improving Remote Working for Users

Issue
The existing remote working solution of a Skibo client had aged beyond the manufacturers life-cycle support and had several faults that prevented it from performing adequately.

Solution
Skibo provided the client with a new VMWare environment hosting the latest edition of Citrix XenApp. The migration from the old system to the new system was seamless with no loss of service and no end user reconfiguration required.

Benefits
The new Citrix environment has provided 100% uptime and delivers a significantly faster, reliable and more stable Remote working solution for the clients users.

Infrastructure Refresh – Physical to Virtual

Issue
A client that was new to Skibo was experiencing numerous reliability and performance problems due to the ageing server and storage infrastructure supporting its business operations. As a result Skibo were tasked with delivering a cost effective solution that addressed both current issues and future IT resource requirements.

Solution
Skibo implemented a new physical environment that was sized to meet anticipated future growth and that reduced the number of existing ten servers down to four via a hardware solution utilising current technology that incorporates host failover capability and SAN storage replication. Services were then migrated from the old technology onto a Virtualised infrastructure supported by the new hardware along with the build and deployment of a new Citrix Xenapp solution.

Benefits
The new physical and virtualised platform delivers to the client a significantly more performant, reliable and resilient infrastructure that provides far greater flexibility in terms of computing resource management, all of which was key to productivity for their business .

Complete Wireless Implementation

Issue
One of our clients expanded their office area and built a new warehouse. As the client wanted to use wireless Hand Held Terminals (HHT) to scan packages coming into and out of the warehouse they tasked Skibo with implementing a wireless network to not only connect the HHT’s to their central database from the warehouse and the car park areas but also deliver this service access across their existing office premises for staff and guests.

Solution
Using globally recognised and enterprise standard Cisco equipment, Skibo implemented a full wireless solution covering the inside and outside of their entire office and warehouse premises by installing and connecting twenty three access points including specially designed access points for outside. The solution provides the clients staff with the ability to connect to its office network wirelessly using their own Active Directory logon credentials and users in the warehouse can scan the packages using a HHT device with the information sent via wireless immediately to the central database for processing. The wireless network was also segregated for both client staff access with access for visitors also being able to connect to its Guest wireless network using a supplied username and password.

Benefits
The implementation of a wireless solution has greatly increased mobility and productivity, with staff being able to access the corporate network from almost anywhere across the entire client office and warehouse areas.
